The setting of A Farewell to Arms is mildly important to the overall plot of the story .The story is set in Switzerland and Italy . The story is set during a two year period between 1916 and 1918 at the height of World War I.
Most of the story is set in Italy during WWI. The Italians are part of allied forces that include the US and Great Britain among others. The atmosphere there is very warlike and brings out a depressing mood in the story. There is always confusion in the camp where the ambulance drivers live. Along with a depressing mood there is also a mood of darkness in the story because there is always confusion and havoc. Also when the ambulance drivers are on there runs to rescue the wounde3d it is always dark and dreary.
There are many things in the story that would normally make a person think of being depressed or sad. One example of this is the emphaces on the rain that takes place in the story. The author wants the reader to think that something bad is going to happen when he brings rain and storms into the story but it rarely does. The qoute "And the rain won't make any difference" is a good example of this
The end of the story is set in Switzerland which is a neutral country in the WWI. Switzerland has beuatiful valleys and mountains that bring about love in the atmospherte of the story. The setting goes perfect with the story since the story is about the love between a man and women.
It is a surprise when Catherines baby dies because the mood of the story doesn't really lead up to the death of her baby. The death of the baby is in a hospital which is were the baby was concieved. I think Hemingway did this on pupose to put some irony in the story
